A different kind of M1 Procar

18 September 2009 3 Comments

When Lamborghini collaborated with BMW back in the late 70′s to build a production race car, the product was know as the BMW M1. These were hand built under the Motorsport Division of BMW as a homologation race car. Jochen Neerpasch head of BMW Motorsport devised a one-make champhionship using modified M1s which resulted later on as what we all know now as the BMW M1 Procar.

Now a typical M1 Procar aesthetically looks like an M1 on steroids. The muscular fender flares bolted down on each fender along with that large wing in the back just gives this iconic production car a memorable shape.

Here is a fine example:

But I came across a different kind of BMW M1 Procar. This car is owned and maintained by Petit Onion Racing.

The rear spoiler is the only part that this M1 shares with the typical Procar.

Instead of the fender flares, Petit Onion Racing used a box-flare widebody fenders to house the super wide tires. Even the bumper is different. This is the first and only M1 Procar I’ve seen running this aero style.

It was brought out for the 2009 Time Machine Festival held in Japan earlier this year. Here’s a picture of it below being serviced and prepped.

And here’s a video of it warming up the engine. It’s kinda boring listening to it at idle but fast forward to 4:30 and towards the end of the video where you can hear it rev…. sound of music!

That is awesome to the extreme, what a sweet kit on there. Interesting spot for the quick fuel filler, one would think that having that section open instead of a lexan pane or body panel would detract some of the air needed for downforce going to the wing on the right side.

I think this bodystyle originally made it appearance in Group 5 Racing in the Special Production Cars series.

Doesn’t look extreme like the March body work one.
