BMW E92 M3 DTM Concept

30 September 2009 5 Comments

This BMW E92 M3 DTM Concept racecar rendering was done for SPEEDHUNTERS. They dedicated the month of September to be a BMW month. I was initially contacted by Rod to feature my widebody E36 but had to turn it down due to my schedule and the status of the car. But I proposed an idea of an E92 M3 DTM racecar desktop wallpaper and that worked out best.

The E92 M3 DTM Concept Racecar story.
Back in early August, a rumor came out that BMW might consider entering in the DTM series. This news came after the announcement that BMW had decided to pull out of F1. BMW have not been in the DTM series for a long time and the last car they entered was an E30 M3. They weren’t so pleased with developments in the WTCC so they are looking else were. There are still plenty of issues to consider so they can’t say for sure if they will commit to DTM or not.

Regardless, my mind was tickled with the idea of seeing another full blown BMW racecar with a whole new configuration. I was ecstatic seeing the BMW E92 M3 GT2 in person during the Long Beach Grand Prix and as awesome looking as that car is, I figured for the DTM series, it might look different.

I was aware that aftermarket tuner “Flossman Auto Design” did release their first gen widebody kit for the E92 model with seems like it was heavily influenced by DTM cars. There were certain areas I like and some not so much. So I decided to create my own body kit design. Here are some pics of the Flossman kit.

So taking cues from the existing DTM cars I incorporated their fender vents, rear spoiler, splitter, canards, etc.

I also took some styling cues from the recently released Efficient Dynamics Concept car. In addition I thought it would be cool to update the shape of the headlight to the upcoming facelifted 3er.

Design Process:

This is the base image I used. The BMW E92 M3 GT2 ALMS racecar.

This is how it looked like after adding my own DTM body kit design. You can comapre it to the original and will see that almost every part of the car have been changed.

This is how it looked like with the graphics and the livery.

And to finish it all off, I set the car in a new background setting, added my own effects and sent it over to the boys at Speedhunters. Here is the SPEEDHUNTERS Desktop Wallpaper as posted by Mike (auto-otaku).
