Where the wild things are

15 October 2009 One Comment

When I need to find inspiration in designing body kits, liveries, digital renderings and such, I look at many places like nature and even the human body for the non conventional form and fluidity. One source that never fails to inspire me is Motorsport. The racecars whatever series (Le Mans, SuperGT, DTM, WTCC, VLN, BTCS and even Pikes Peak) whether at the pits or burning up the tracks are like a visual drug for me that gets my creative juice flowing. Motorsport is where the wild things are for me. I find myself staring at these wildest aeros, admiring the most advanced and well engineered shapes and contours for hours on end. It’s cool to see how some of these cars are just normal street cars transformed into a track monsters.

Take for example the Renault Mégane. This french car is a small family car first produced in 1995. It has since evolved and it’s now in it’s 3rd reincarnation. Here is how the Renault Mégane III looks in factory form.

And from there, Renault worked this model out to get it ready for the 2009 campaign. A bigger and better performance powerplant was added, better suspension and really reconfigured the car to win races.

One of the mods addressed with the factory Mégane was the aerodynamics. This is where my brain starts spinning with glee. Renault didn’t just add fender flares, deep bumpers and a rear wing, but they did it with style.

Check out the Renault Mégane Trophy racecar.

The aero was designed with so much thought giving a bland family coupe a boost of sexiness.

the doors even got the lambo treatment LOL

It’s great to stare at and study these racecars in this stage without any livery or sponsor logos and graphics so you can see the shapes and form clearly .

But just as satisfying is seeing the car with livery and graphics in action as how it appears in real racing condition.

And here’s another Renault Mégane campaigned by a different team.

And don’t even get me started on the wild, alien-like shape of the Mazda Furai. I went a many catatonic-like state on this one.

I suck at competitive driving but these beautiful racecars are just one of the reason I’m a fan of Motorsport- the place where the wild things are for me.
