BMW M5 CSL
The title might be a little confusing as BMW never officially made an E28 M5 CSL. But the creativity of BMW fanatics takes the idea to reality.
One of these creative guys is Matt Kinnby from Sweden. He owned a BMW E28 he built as a track car.
This is how it looked back then.
E28 came from the BMW factory with 4 doors but that will be addressed later on.
They retired the E28 M535i and thought of recreating the E9 3.0 CLS aka Batmobile using their track car as a base.
So they bought themselves a 528i to experiment with..
This spare car was used to recreate the fender box flares of the Batmoibile CSL along with fitting the wider wheels.
The BBS wheels are pretty much the same spec and size from the wheel set up of the original E9 3.5 CLS.
The engine is a genuine BMW M5 S38B38 6 cylinder, 3.8l 24v
So after all the body panel parts came of off their mold, it was then fitted and painted to their track car along with the BBS wheels.
The track car was also painted all white to prepare it for the Batmobile CSL livery.
Remember the extra set of doors? Well if you check out the rear fenders, they are now covering those extra set of doors so they were welded shut converting this car into a coupe.
Kinda cool to see it so clean and free from stickers/graphics. I like it just as much.
And then the full E9 CLS livery was then applied..

Wheels are 10×17 in the front and 12×17 in the rear for the wet track set up. For dry, they swapped to their wider wheels – 10.5×16 in the front and 13×16 in the rear wrapped with slicks.
The similarities to the original E9 CSL doesn’t end with the livery and the wheels set up but extends to to suspension setting combined with the E24 635 factory racers with the data partly collected directly from BMW Motorsport. The roll cage set up is a copy of the one used for the 1982 ETCC winner BMW 528i E28.

Body: BMW E28 w/o sunroof, rebuilt to coupé, extended FIA safety rollcage, raceweight aprox ~1100kg with driver. Vented body – 200mm (8″) wider in rear, 160mm (6.3″) wider in front.
Engine: BMW S38B38 (6-cyl 3.8l-24v 365hk/8000rpm)
Gearbox: Getrag 260, shortshifted 5-speed.
Final drive: BMW M3 Group A limited slip, 4 different gear ratios available.
Front brakes: 6-piston aluminum calipers, 330mm (13″) rotors.
Rear brakes: 4-piston aluminum calipers, 303mm (12″) rotors.
Wheels front: 10×17” BBS (rain), 10.5×16” BBS (slick).
Wheels rear: 12×17” BBS (rain), 13×16” BBS (slick).
Tires front: 275-17” rain, 11,0-23,5-16” slick.
Tires rear: 335-17” rain, 12,5-25-16” slicks.
Chassis / suspension front: BMW Motorsport/Schnitzer 635CSi Grp.A. Suspension arms extended to allow more aggressive settings, wheelbase extended by 40 mm (1.6″), and track width extended by 80mm (3.1″).
Chassis / suspension rear: BMW Motorsport/Schnitzer 635CSi Grp.A, Suspension arms fully adjustable for camber/caster and toe. Reinforced A-arms and all stiff mounted joints, no rubber in attachment points.

Sick, but they should have moved the “b” pilar back a bit, and stretch the front doors a bit.

oh for sure, they really should have spent the time to fab new doors just for that, A+ will read again. laaawlzwtfbbq.

Great great build! I love how he incorporated the newest gen M5 side gills they look nice even though they are so much more modern.
