ALMS Round 4 results

12 July 2010 No Comment

Round 4 of the American Le Mans Series held in Miller Motorsport Park is in the books.

This is the first race for these guys after some of them returned from the Le Mans 24-hr.

Here are some highlights.

During qualifying, the # 17 Falken Tire Porsche caught fire. Here it is caught on video.

It was later reported that this was caused by a resin that the team used to repair an old damage which might have ignited during the qualifying.

During the event, there was also a big crash at the start of the second Cooper Tires Prototype Lites race for the Utah GP. Amazingly, no one was injured.

But when the dust settled in the 3.048 mile track, the Patron Highcroft Racing HPD continued their winning streak for the third time in the LMP class.

In the GT2 class, RISI Competizione Ferrari 430 GT dominated their class by qualifying and winning in First place.

Second place went to #92 BMW RLR M3 GT with Tommy Milner and Bill Auberland behind the wheel.

Third place was taken by Jan Magnussen and Johnny O’Connell for the Corvette Racing.

Fourth place was the other BMW from RLR – the #90 BMW M3 GT piloted by Dirk Muller and Joey Hand.

Firth place was the Flying Lizard Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 RSR

Press release from BMW Motorsport:

BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Takes Lead in ALMS GT Manufacturer’s Championship

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – July 12, 2010… With second- and fourth-place GT class finishes in yesterday’s Utah Grand Prix, the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team has raced BMW to the top of the GT Manufacturer point standings after four rounds of competition in the 2010 American Le Mans Series.

Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner, co-driving the No. 92 M3 GT, finished 14 seconds behind the winner in the two-hour-and-forty-five-minute contest, continuing this season’s BMW-RLR podium streak. Joey Hand and Dirk Müller finished fourth in the No. 90 M3 GT, losing a third-place finish in the closing minutes of the race, as a damaged exhaust reduced the BMW’s power.

Auberlen and Milner’s third podium finish of the year leapfrogs them ahead of teammates Hand and Müller to third in GT driver points. Hand and Müller stand fourth.
